CYCLE_CITATIONS

WHY SHOULD YOU FOLLOW ROAD RULES WHEN CYCLING?

Check this out...

In August 2006, the Sausalito Police Department focused enforcement on the most prevalent traffic safety violations being committed by bicyclists that were being reported to the Police. Their intention was to improve compliance for bicyclists in adhering to traffic safety laws. They particularly watched for cyclists who failed to stop for red signal lights and for pedestrians in crosswalks in order to reduce the possibility of collisions and to improve compliance to these laws. Officers also cited cyclists who did not ride in a designed bike lane where bike lanes are provided.

Scott Paulin, Chief of Police, has issued an update on the results from those August bike violation enforcement efforts. A total of 74 citations were issued to cyclists in Sausalito. The violations for which those citations were issued fell into the following categories:
34 citations for CVC 21453(a): Failure to stop at red signal lights
17 citations for CVC 21208(a): Not using the Bicycle Lane as required
7 citations for CVC 21950(a): Failed to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk
4 citations for CVC 21202(a): Bike not as far to the right as possible
4 citations for CVC 27400: Wearing a headset on both ears
3 citations for CVC 22450(a): Failure to stop at stop signs
5 citations for other miscellaneous infractions 25 cyclists were stopped and given a warning about traffic law violations.

Routine and random enforcement of traffic safety laws involving cyclists will continue by the Sausalito Police Department. Based on feedback to officers and from the public, the goal of increasing many cyclists' compliance and awareness to obeying traffic safety laws while traveling in Sausalito was achieved by this focused enforcement effort.
